The Down4Sound JP23 might be the most recommended bass amp in its power class right now, and for good reason: it delivers serious monoblock power at a price that used to buy half the wattage. Here's our full JP23 review — including the question everyone asks: V1.5 or V2?
JP23 V1.5 vs V2 at a glance
| JP23 V1.5 | JP23 V2 | |
|---|---|---|
| Rated power | 2,300W RMS | 2,800W RMS |
| Price | $329.99 | $399.99 |
| Best for | 1,500–2,300W subs | 2,000–2,800W subs |
Both are compact Class D monoblocks from Down4Sound's JP line — the same family as the JP284 that dominates the 4-channel conversation. See the full JP series guide for how the whole lineup maps out.
What makes the JP23 good
- Honest power for the money. The JP23's reputation was built on dyno videos, not spec sheets — it does rated power with a healthy electrical system, which is exactly what this price bracket usually fails at.
- Compact footprint. It fits under seats and in tight enclosure-side mounting where old-school 2kW amps never would.
- The JP ecosystem. Wired bass remote support (via the RJ cable) and accessories designed around the line.
What it needs from you
Any 2,000W+ amp lives or dies on voltage. Budget the big 3 wiring upgrade and a true-gauge power run from our wiring collection, and read our car audio battery guide if you're pushing it daily — a JP23 V2 at full tilt on a stock electrical system will clip before it ever shows you what it can do. Then spend 20 minutes with the gain-setting guide.
Which version should you buy?
- JP23 V1.5 — $329.99: the value pick. Perfect on a single 1,500W sub like the Sundown SA v.3 12" or American Bass XFL 12" with headroom to spare.
- JP23 V2 — $399.99: $70 more for ~500 extra watts. The move if you're running higher-handling subs or want to never think about upgrading the amp when you step up woofers.
Verdict
The JP23 earns the hype: real power, small footprint, proven track record, priced under the competition. Buy the V2 if your subs (or your plans) can use the extra 500W; buy the V1.5 if the budget is tight and your sub tops out around 1,500W. Either way, put the savings into the electrical — that's what makes this amp sing. Both versions are in stock now, and we can pair one to your subs if you tell us your setup.
