Sealed vs Ported Subwoofer Box: Which Should You Choose?

Ported subwoofer enclosure with 12 inch subwoofer

Ask ten builders "sealed or ported?" and you'll start ten arguments. The truth is simpler: sealed vs ported subwoofer box is a trade between accuracy, output, and space — and once you know what you're optimizing for, the choice makes itself. Here's the honest breakdown.

The short answer

Sealed box Ported box
Sound character Tight, accurate, controlled Louder, deeper, more output per watt
Size Smaller (often half the volume) Larger — port takes space
Output Less efficient (~3dB down) +3dB or more near tuning
Low-end extension Gradual, natural rolloff Strong to tuning frequency, steep drop below
Forgiveness Very forgiving of power and box errors Needs correct tuning + subsonic filter
Best for SQ builds, tight spaces, all-genre listening Bass builds, SPL, rap/EDM/demo music

How a sealed box works

A sealed enclosure traps air that acts like a spring behind the cone — constant control at every frequency. That's why sealed bass sounds "tight": the sub starts and stops exactly with the music. Sealed boxes are smaller, nearly impossible to build wrong, and handle any genre gracefully. The cost is efficiency: you'll need roughly twice the amplifier power to match ported output.

How a ported box works

A ported (vented) enclosure adds a tuned port that reinforces output around its tuning frequency — free loudness, typically +3dB or more where demo songs live (28–38Hz). This is why virtually every SPL and street-bass build runs ported. The trades: the box is bigger, the tuning must match the sub, and below tuning the sub loses control — which is why the subsonic filter on your amp matters (set it just below tuning; our tuning guide shows how).

Which should YOU choose?

  • Choose sealed if: trunk space is tight, you listen to everything from rock to jazz, you want plug-and-forget simplicity, or you're doing a stealth build.
  • Choose ported if: maximum output per dollar is the goal, your playlist is rap/EDM/car-audio demos, and you can give up the cubic feet. This is what 80% of our customers ultimately want.
  • Size it right either way: every sub has a recommended airspace and tuning — our subwoofer box size guide walks through the numbers, including the right subwoofer box for 12 inch and 15 inch drivers.

Skip the math: matched enclosures

We stock pre-built and matched enclosures — including brand-matched designs like the XFL 12" ported box and Resilient Gold ported enclosures — plus complete sub-and-box packages where the pairing is already engineered. Tell us your sub and your music and we'll point you at the right box type, size, and tuning in one reply.
