Shop power and ground wire for car audio at JS Ultimate Sounds — OFC and CCA cable by the foot and by the spool, in the gauges that actually carry current to your amplifiers.
What Gauge Power Wire Do You Need?
Size the wire to your amplifier's current draw and the length of the run, not to its advertised wattage:
- 8 gauge — small amps and systems under roughly 500W
- 4 gauge — the workhorse size for most single-amp builds up to about 1,500W
- 1/0 gauge — high-power monoblocks, multi-amp racks and anything past ~2,000W
Longer runs need thicker wire for the same current. Our car audio wire gauge chart gives exact sizing by amperage and distance.
OFC vs CCA
OFC (oxygen-free copper) carries significantly more current per gauge and resists corrosion better. CCA (copper-clad aluminum) costs less and is fine on modest builds. The practical rule: once you're feeding a real monoblock, buy OFC — or step up a full gauge in CCA. Beware undersized cable sold at a nominal gauge; true-gauge matters more than the label.
Ground Wire Is Half the Circuit
Your ground run should be the same gauge as your power run and as short as practical, landed on sanded bare chassis metal. A poor ground is the single most common cause of amplifier problems — noise, cutting out, and underperformance that people usually blame on the amp.
Complete the Install
Pair power and ground wire with terminals, lugs and distribution blocks, speaker wire, or buy everything together in a complete amp wiring kit. Upgrading the charging path too? See the Big 3 upgrade guide.
